FELPHAM BARBARIANS (AWAY) - Tuesday, May 13, 2003
| And so to Felpham, where the Loafers tried to eradicate the memories of their opening defeat. And failed. The Loafers - a man short after frantic ringing round by Keith Budd had failed to raise a full quotient of players - elected to bat first and, after Dave Burford had smashed a couple of fours through the off side, looked to be comfortably placed. However, his opening partner, the doughty Trevor Almack then departed for a duck, a score so popular amongst the Loafers that day that it was also endorsed by Messrs Walsgrove, Pennicott and Holden. Following Burford's dismissal for 11, the only resistance of note was provided by debutant Simon Baldey - with 28 - and Shaun Bevis, with a lusty unbeaten 24. Of particular aggrievement to the Loafers was that much of the damage was inflicted by sometime Loafer Lee Russell, who cunningly mixed wides with the occasional straight delivery to take three for 25. By the end of 20 overs, the Loafers had somehow managed to drag their score to 87 for eight. However, despite a lively opening burst from Bevis, the Felpham Barbarians soon launched into the Loafers' bowling with enthusiasm, and a four from a legside Holden delivery ended the game in only the fourteenth over, the Barbarians reaching their target with only two wickets down. Afterwards, both sides decamped to the Fox at Felpham, where assorted sandwiches, chicken legs and things-that-smelt-of-garlic-and-made-Mrs-Holden-complain-when-her-husband-got-in were served, and where Trevor told the following joke: Bloke gets washed up on a desert island. He can't understand it - he looks at the sand, it's purple. The sea, purple. The fish in the rock-pools, the limpets, the crabs, all purple. Then he looks at his hand, he realises that his skin has turned purple. He looks up at the sky, he sees that the sky and the sun are both purple. Then the penny drops. "My god!" he says, "I've been marooned!" (Complaints to T. Almack, c/o the Loafers) Felpham Barbarians won by eight wickets |
