  • Angie Smith: North Carolina. RAF Bentwaters, Jan 1989-Dec 1992, 81 EMS, Munitions Supply. Would like to comment to Buddy Guidry and Francisco Mercado. I was stationed with you two at RAF Bentwaters. We were in a little hut, then moved into a renovated building that looked like a Pizza Hut. Squadron motto: "We Deliver". Looking for old friends: Jo L. Smith, a dear friend to me, James C. Collier, Jack Hawley, Shifon Foster, Daryl Robinson, Shannon, and one of my closest friends, Robyn Freswick, she used to be married to a guy who had the nickname " Fudge", played soccer. Robyn, I am now stationed with a mutual friend of ours, Julie Froedge. If any one remembers me, lease contact me by e-mail. It was really neat to be able to revisit a place where I have so many fond memories. 6/14/99
  • Craig W Smith: Elkhart, IN. RAF Bentwaters, Oct 1966-Jan 1968, 81st Security Police. Would like to hear from anyone who remembers me or my wife, Madeline, who also worked as Civilian at RAF Bentwaters. 6/07/06
  • David Smith: London UK. RAF Bentwaters, 1961-62. Anyone remember a group of crazy English guys who, in 1961-62, painted the runway? We lived in tents and caravans parked well away from the strip. Great days and happy memories. Names lost in time but if anyone remembers love to hear from you. Were you one of the MP's who was sent to guard us during alerts? 7/19/01

  • Jonathan C Smith: Trawling the 'net, really to check out my PC post-start-2000(!) and stumbled on the RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge site. Brilliant! I used to live in Kesgrave, near Ipswich, Suffolk, UK. My Mother worked at RAF Bentwaters (Base Supply office). Anyone remember 'Chester' and 'Sgt. Berg(sp), 1961-63. Father also worked at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge, Quantity Surveyor with the British MoD and helped maintain the base operational facilities-runways, etc. He was once nearly arrested by armed MP's because he was checking on construction work near a bomb store. It was the one day he wasn't carrying all his passes. The MP's sat him down, made enquiries and were told "you can't miss him-he's always smoking his pipe". As it happened, Dad was dying for a smoke, but thought if he put his hand into his pocket to get his pipe, one or more of the M16's pointed at him might just go off! He laughed (a long time) afterwards but at the time what he was saying about Americans would have done nothing for US/UK relations, little for NATO, and could have triggered WW3, but that was years ago. Great to see this site. I visited the bases several times and loved looking 'close-up' at the F101, F4, A10 and other interesting visitors. 1/1/00

Eventually went to the US as Sergeant Major of ROTC detachment in WV. Then commissioned in Medical Service Corps. Left USAF in 1977 when they tried to send this Lieutenant to Michigan to recruit doctors. Enough for now. Great site! 1/28/99

  • Keith Snyder: Dallas, Texas. My father, Charles Snyder, RAF Bentwaters, flew Voodoos with the 92nd TFS from 1960-63. 81TFW Voodoo operations are a well kept secret in military aviation history books. The B and RF models are the ones generally addressed. The single seat bombers have been overlooked for the most part. I have been gathering photos and information for several years now, in the hopes of capturing those years. What the 81st did with those aircraft was incredible, and should be recognized in print. If anyone reading this has photos of the Voodoos, RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge flightline or aircraft facilities, Wheelus detachments, etc., please consider sharing them with me for this work. I am also gathering personal exepriences with the aircraft, from pilots, maintainers, and others who worked with or flew the aircraft. Any help would be appreciated. 5/15/00 & 05/23/08

  • Richard Sommerfelt Vacaville, CA. RAF Bentwaters, Aug 1977-Aug 1981, 81st EMS, 581st AGS. Hey Everyone, I can't believe I found a web site especially for RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge alumni. I was sent to the 81st EMS from tech school. After two years working the F-4s they x-fered them out for the inbound A-10s when I was reassigned to the 581st AMU 78th Bushmasters Sq. Work was hard and long hours as a sheetmetal man and crew chief. Met many great people and will never forget the camoraderie. Greatest assignment any USAF person could land! Hope to hear from all of you 81st alumni! God speed! 01/17/08

  • Allen Sutherland: California. RAF Bentwaters, Oct 1960-Jul 1964. 81st Supply Sq. My Wife's name is Barbara. We lived at 48 Sidegate Lane in Ipswich. Barbara and I just returned July the 13th from a 5 week visit to family in London and Coventry and friends in Birmingham where Barbara grew up. She was born in Ruskin Collage in Oxford and we met in London at the Hammersmith Palladium and were married Nov 30,1963 at Caxton Hall, Westminster, London. She was born March 1941 after her mother was evacuated from London during the blitz. I was born June 1938 in Mt. Shasta, CA and enlisted in Oakland, CA, April 1960. What a surprise, a pleasant one, to come across your great web site. It brought back many memories of things I had not thought about for ages. Those years I spent in England were very good to me. I too went to Lackland and then to advanced training in Amarillo . I attended Supply Inventory Management School. I Initially was assigned the 81st Air Base Sq, RAF Bentwaters and arrived there 1 Oct 1960. Was put in the second hut over from the orderly hut, but after two weeks they reassigned me and two others to the 81st Supply Sq, back up the street. I was billeted in those other ugly cold huts until 1962 when they moved us into the brick barracks. We watched them build the new mess hall right across from out hut. Nearly everything was in Nissan Huts of one size or another. The Base Supply offices were in the Tech area, we called it the flight line area, in a group of warehouses down the end where the salvage yard was from, transportation, Fire dept and Data Control. The mail room was just up the street from the gate, then again I might have it all wrong, its been so long ago. I guess everything changed over the years from what I read on your web site. I guess we are pretty old timers aren't we. Well I could go on an on but you remember all of this stuff so I will stop. I will say that one of the biggest surprises that I had when I was in the AF was when I left there and reported to Travis AFB, CA. I was informed that they had received a message from RAF Bentwaters promoting my to Sergeant E5. I sure needed the money as you well know. Our daughter Tracy was born 1 Nov 1964 at Travis AFB Hospital . After I got out I worked as a welder for 30 years for the Navy so our daughter was born when I worked for the AF and our son was born while I worked for the Navy. I'm attaching a couple of photos, that's me on the right with glasses, the other fellow Owen Chastine, Base Supply, also married an English girl named Maureen and they were still there when we left. I must say I found out things I did not know from your great site. Good info, good maps, did not see anyone I knew personly. 9/03/05

This man is my fiancee's father. She was born in Sept 1970. Her father Joseph was about 20 years old at the time. It seems that he returned to the US at about that same period. He was an Air Policeman until 1970 and probably all of 1969 as well. He is of Italian origin, quiet, short and with very dark hair (at the time). He used to drive a red sports car that he apparently brought with him from the states. Do you know him or know someone that does? 5/28/00 & 7/24/00

  • Allan Stearns: Ft Walton Beach, FL. RAF Bentwaters, May 1975-May 1978, Wing Safety Office. Just discovered the site. My 3 years in the 81st were the best in 26 plus yrs in the AF. Was a Capt then and lived in Woodbridge Town. Both children born at RAF Lakenheath during this tour. Loved the place and the opportunities to sightsee were great. BG Jerry Larson, and Rudy Wacker were commanders during my years. F-4D's were giving way to the Warthogs when I left. What a shame to see all the concrete shelters etc. going to waste.
