  • Dennis Rainwater: RAF Woodbridge/RAF Bentwaters, Nov 1988-Jan 1991, Det4, 28WS. I was a Weather Observer working in the weather stations (immediately below the ATC tower cabs) mostly RAF Woodbridge. I lived in Melton for a while, and so enjoyed walking from my house on Orchard Close into town to snack on a pastry from the baker on the corner. While on base, I lived in the new three-story brick barracks adjacent to the ball-fields. I had a room to myself most of my time on base. What wonderful, comfortable facilities they were! I have not seen anyone that I knew from back then on this forum, and am wondering if anyone knows of any other places I might look. Also, there was a legend attached to the WB tower about a friendly ghost named "Herman the German" who haunted the tower on dark, lonely nights. There was certainly enough creaking and groaning to lend credibility to that legend! Does anyone else have any factual information regarding how that legend got started? My understanding is that there really was a German pilot named Herman VonSomething-or-other who crashed and died on the WB runway during WWII. That is where my knowledge ends. Any further information would make me happy by quelling my curiosity! What wonderful times those were. I wish I had realised just how special all those memories would be to me now. I'd have taken more time to savour the moments and to register more impressions and feelings. I loved England. Thank you folks for making this site available for us to reminisce! 11/27/01

My wife Judy and I lived in the town of Woodbridge, 123 Castle St, to be exact. We plan on visiting there when we come back in May-June 2001. Some that may read this e-mail may remember seeing our home. We were known as the "Yanks with the US Flag in their front room window". In fact, that was considered a landmark to many as a way to find us and our home. Other memories are of Felixstow and our many wonderful trips to London. We are looking forward to our return visit. We will be first going to Amsterdam, then throught the chunnel to London, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Scotland and back to London for the Queen's Birthday on the 16th and then depart for the US. I am sure we will do several side trips while there. If you have any suggestions, we are open to your views and thoughts. I really enjoyed your pages and links. You have done so much. • John Reed Msg (Ret. USAF): RAF Bentwaters, 1960-64 and 1973-74 until retirement. It was a very good but rough time in the 60's, but with the people there at the time how could we miss. There is a Colonel? on the page. Perhaps you are thinking of Col. Crouch(left in 1960). (not the right Base Cmdr, was Wing Cmdr...Jim.) Remember him and his Saturday morning parades. Was in the 81st A&E Sq. w/Major McGlynn as CO. Worked at RAF Woodbridge with Msg Dan Hymer, A1c Oscar Williams, Al Schoessow, Col. Burns 92nd, Col. Stuyvesant 78th (spelling?), Col Strickland-Not sure-this was towards the end of my first tour, Major Drew? I recall him as being the Maintenance Office in Maint. Control. Certainly, he set a speed record with one of the F101's, Zeigert, Gregory, "Buster" Reed 78th, and two more who should be remembered: Lt. Bye and Lt. Nishabayashi (again, spelling and with apologies), To best of my knowledge, they are both deceased - killed in A/C accidents there. We still correspond with friends and keep informed of what is happening. Excellent people and have visited them. Rememberances. 2/8/99

I was a local boy and visited the Junior High School on exchange and also participated in the Boy Scouts of America activities at Woodbridge base. (Troop 277 - I was in Flaming Arrow patrol and still have uniform!) Trying to contact any sons or parents who were there at the time. Memory not too good but names that come to mind are: Mike Lupo, John Sines, Bruce Ham, Woody Parramor (I think his dad was the Base Commander at the time?), Guy Fowl, Richard Clark and many more. We took many trips to other parts of England on expeditions and I think I was the only English boy in the BSA at the time! I'm now 47 and would love to hear from anyone who recalls me or those times. A very interesting website which must bring back many happy memories for those who served here. Thanks. 4/13/00

  • Robert Reynolds : Pensacola FL. RAF Bentwaters, 1983-87, 81st Trans, Vehicle Maintenance. I haven't thought about RAF Bentwaters in years, but I was glad to find this site. It was the best assignment I had in my 20 year career. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who was stationed there back then. Especially Vehicle Maintenance personnel: Huerta, Prohaska, Tom, Richie, Ski, Larry Burke, Tom Sneddon, Trosclair. Perhaps they can help me with my memory lapses. I am still in touch with Shawn Colberg and Valerie Fioretta. Once in a while I hear from Scott Kirsch. Perhaps someone remembers a girl named Mary (her last name escapes me) who I went out with in 1985-86. She worked at the chow hall, lived in the dorm, had blonde hair, talked kind of slow,(sorry Mary, it was more like a slight southern accent.) Her roommate went out with a friend of mine (his name escapes me also, I have a picture of him somewhere, he was from Boston) he introduced me to Mary. We went out for a few months, partied at the club often and had a few laughs. We'd go to the bowling alley for a late night snack or put on our uniforms and go to midnight chow. We remained friends after we broke up and I think she married a Brit. Perhaps someone remembers her or at least her last name. Anyone remember "Bag Nasty" or the "Bag Nasty Lady?" How about Phil the taxi dispatcher (got me home many a night) "Need a cab Woody Base!" Also went out with a few British girls: Barbara W? Her best friend was Shirley Johnson, from Leiston and inseparable. Shirley might have worked at the base until it closed? Barbara married an American and moved to Arizona? I hung out in Aldeburgh quite a bit. Went out with a girl there named Liz Grozika? I think she eventually got a job at the base and married an American as well. There was a girl named Celia. I'd be interested to know what she remembers. She worked at the CBPO I think. God my memory is shot! Must have been all those pints I drank in England). 8/26/99 05/04/07

After leaving RAF Bentwaters in 1974 we settled in Winthrop Mass, my husbands home town. We have since moved to the beautiful state of New Hampshire. • Robert F "Granny" Ridout, Maj (Ret): RAF Bentwaters, 92nd TFS, 1969-73.Just found your site. I was at various times Squadron Historian, Awards & Decs Officer, drove red '69 Vette that I bought from a guy in the 78th. He had gotten it new but it wasn't smogged for USA (which gave it true 350hp). In Jun 1971 I once got in a "race" in downtown London on a Sunday, early morning, only to find entire street ahead blocked by Bobbies & their cars. Boy were they upset (I forgot about radios). Looked like a swat team standoff. Biggest thing to happen that morning, obviously. They thought I had stolen the Vette because I was "fleeing". Put me in patrol car while one of the officers eagerly climbed into my car and follwed us back to the stationhouse. In spite of all my ID's & my yank accent (and the Vette itself, which was probably the only brand new one in London & had a license plate from Texas with the name "RIDOUT"). The chief constable insisted on calling the Command Post at RAF Bentwaters, which in turn caused the duty hog to call my Sq Cmdr, Col Wild Bill Hubbel on the phone, at home, in bed. Hubble asked the cop to put "his toad" on the line, then read me the riot act. But told the bobbie "he would discipline the wayward officer personally". Implying that the military did horrible things to foolish officers. That satisfied the cops and I proceeded on my way to Heathrow, where I was picking up a beautiful blond (girl). I was late, which upset the girl, so she had called the Command Post at RAF Bentwaters, which caused the duty hog to again wake up the Colonel. Shxx oh dear. As we used to say. Would love to hear from any of the toads! I've got a million of these stories, used to write them down in little notebooks. 7/19/04
  • Gerilyn 'Geri' Ridzon: Connecticut. RAF Bentwaters, Mar 1987-Sep 1990, 81st SUPP. I would love to get in touch with the people that I was stationed with. At the time I was at Bentwaters my last name was Kelly. Hope to hear from someone soon. 3/30/01
  • Dean Riewald: I just stumbled across your web site about RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge. I spent the first two years (1987-89) of my USAF career (still in progress) stationed at "Woody Base". I loved it and hated to hear that was to be turned back over to the Brits. Nothing against the Brits, I just would have loved to have been able to get another assignment to the base again. They had spent quite a bit of money upgrading the facilities during my time there and it was really nice. I was in the fire department at Woodbridge and remember fondly going up and down the taxiways on operations checks. We used to practice spraying water on the old aircraft at the end of the taxiway. There was an F-4 and a couple of other aircraft that memory escapes me. We used to pull the old "fog watch" trick on the newbies too! Anyway, just thought I'd drop you a note. Great base and great area. 3/20/00

RAF Bentwaters was like a ghost town. The guard on the gate at let us drive in and look around. It was rather sad. We would love to hear from anyone stationed in the 67th at that time. 2/26/00
