I would like to post my name on this website to find any of my dad's old buddies. He was at Turner AFB in Albany, GA before that. He died suddenly in a hotel in Woodbridge in October 1961 while tying up loose ends in preparation for transfer to Florida. My mother was an English citizen before marrying. Her name is Dorothy, but may have been known as Doff or Dotty. Both she and my dad were 31 in 1961. When my dad died I was 7 and my sisters were 5 and 2. Helen, Valerie and Vivian. Vivian was born in 1959 and I assume that was in the base hospital. Before living on Old Barrack Road in Woodbridge, we lived in Wickham Market. My dad drove a VW bus that he adored and he liked antique cars. When he wasn't working on airplane engines he was playing with car engines. I will be grateful to find any of his old buddies and hear their memories of my dad and the good old times. I include a photos of my dad. 3/18/01

  • Terry L Malzi: RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge Jan 1980-82 and Nov 1983-Nov 1987. 702x0, Fire Station and then orderly room of the CES. My wife is from Ipswich and also worked at Debenhams till we got married May 1982. I believe the Col's name was Thompson. They named the road after him. I came to RAF Bentwaters shortly after the crash but had a friend who showed me the box's the parts ended up in. 4/14/01 Regarding the Thompson Crash. As I understand it, the crash took place at RAF Chicksands in Bedfordshire. Interestingly, there is no runway at RAF Chicksands. The aircraft cart wheeled in during a demo flight, and the pilot was reportedly killed in a sideways ejection. Mrs Thompson sued the aircraft and seat manufacturer (FRC/McDonell-Douglas), and (reportedly) received a multi-million dollar settlement. The aircraft had a 'beta' Stability Augmentation System (SAS), and it was believed that an inflight SAS failure caused an uncommanded roll(?). A monument erected to Col Thompson at RAF Chicksands was moved to Base Ops at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, in about 1995. It was interesting to see it at DMAFB after seeing it at RAF Chicksands in 987. It was at the DM rededication ceremony that I saw Mrs Thompson and her son who was then flying for the USAF. I also remember seeing the boxes containing the remains of Col Thompson's aircraft in the old Victor Alert area at RAF Bentwaters shortly after my arrival there in 1980. An additional story associated with Col Thompson regards an incident which occurred within a month of his crash. I spoke with crew chiefs at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge who claimed to have removed branches from the good colonel's aircraft nose wheelwell. He was supposedly restricted from flying for some unspecified period of time, and only returned to flying status shortly before his fatal crash. Having seen the videos of "normal" missions flown by A-10 squadron pilots, I have no reason to question the above report. Alan S Wisniewski, 2LT Retired. 4/11/01.

  • Larry Maughan: Sandy, Utah. RAF Bentwaters, Aug 1965-Sep 1966, 81st FMS. Great memories were made at RAF Bentwaters. I joined the 81 FMS after 8 months at Toul Rosierre, France. PCS'd to France from Luke AFB, AZ. The Chief of Maintenance in France said he didn't want to retrain anyone with less than 18 months retainability. They were going from RB-66's to RF-4C's. So, orders were cut sending me to RAF Bentwaters. What a blessing that was. The squadron from France headed for Nam shortly after getting their birds and the base was closed when France booted Uncle Sam's military out. I was trained on the F-101 and then the F-4C. Enjoyed TDY's to Wheelus and Spain. I've since retired from the Utah ANG where I was assigned to the 130 EIS. Also retired from US WEST as a Central Office Engineer and am now employed as Director of Network Communications at the Salt Lake Community College. Life has been great and many of my fondest memories are of the USAF, especially time spent at RAF Bentwaters. England was great and so is the AF!2/13/03

Went TDY to Turkey in 1964 with Ed Vogler. Great guy, good airman. Sharp as a tack. I remember many of things talked about by the folks signing your page. Especially the crash of the F-101 at RAF Bentwaters, Col Olds and Lt Col James (both later Generals as we all know). Met both. Drank whisky with Robin Olds in the 78th VA one Christmas in the early 60s. Was chewed out by Chappie James at the RAF Woodbridge Main gate in about 1963 for not saluting him. • Art 'Mike' McMichael: Bradenton/Sarasota, FL. RAF Bentwaters, Sep 1951-. Hi Guys, I have been with you since January when Tom Beal put me on to you. Thats about the same time that Chuck "Hamburger" Wrobel started burning up my machine with info. [Love that man's spirit]. I have been meaning to send my Bio. to your site, but I am still so young and handsome. I hated to admit that I was one of those old dudes that came over to Bentwaters in Sep 1951. I did go back in Apr 1998, however. I did not recognize Piccadilly nor was there a Bee-Hive. 'Ah Sweet Youth--where did you go?'. Sincerely, I appreciate your site and applaud your efforts. I owe you so very much for the memories. 8/13/99
