A1C Paul M Rose: RAF Bentwaters, Feb 28 1991-Sep 27 1992, 81st Comm Sq, Air Traffic Controller. First off, I'd like to compliment you on such an incredible website. It's brought back so many memories and I never knew how much history went with the base I was so involved with for the 18 months I was there. I was a trainee switching from Woody Tower to Bentwaters Tower about Feb '92. Unfortunately I was unable to attain my 5-level and chose to separate. But, those 18 months were the most memorable of my life to date. Not a day goes by that I don't think about over there. Arriving in country for 3 weeks of leave before reporting, I was met
at the customs exit at Heathrow Terminal 2 by my fiance. We met in basic training and went to tech school at Keesler AFB, MS. She arrived in country two months before I did and was stationed at the "elephant cage" at RAF Chicksands. Learning to drive on the other side of the
road was just plain weird and took me two months to get used to it. So, my future first wife (now divorced) and I had a wonderful time getting to know each other more and enjoying England in it's multitudes of beauty. RAF Chicksands was a gorgeous base. It had wide open fields and beautifully sculptured landscaping with a pond and various waterfowl. It was a nice base to visit even though it was miles from civilization. When I reported to RAF Bentwaters, I was assigned a roommate and I wasn't sure I liked having a roommate much, no privacy. I got used to it, though. March 2, 1991, 2:45 p.m. w/ dusk only an 2 hours away, I drove down the flight line going for my first shift in Woody Tower. I marvelled at the quaint surroundings of the one runway, the 21st Special Ops hangar and the H-53's and C-130's sitting on the apron. Then, I pulled up and parked at the shortest air traffic control tower in the Air Force, all two stories of it (three if you count the basement). I walked up those metal stairs (I nearly broke my kneecap slipping on it after it rained many times) and entered the tower cab. I was introduced to my first trainer, SSgt Raymond Curry. He was a nice guy, but strictly by the book. He was my favorite trainer, I wish I had kept him, he was most patient. Continued 10/7/01 Paul Rose: Houston, TX. RAF Bentwaters, 18 months, 81st Comm Sq/ Air Traffic. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to the Tansey's for all their hard work to maintain this website. When I began looking for RAF Bentwaters on the internet a couple years ago, I was not very optimistic I would find anything near the quality of this website. Thanks to the Tansey's, I've found out what happened to two of my former controller friends and have learned a lot about others I didn't know well. My hat is off to you both. Thanks a million! 4/17/05
