My Hobbies

Golf

golfGolf is my number-one hobby. I learned the game when I worked with Philippine Phoenix Surety & Insurance Company. They advised me to play golf, so I can use it in representing our company in Cagayan de Oro City's insurance market. I happened to love this game because of the challenges that one has to engage with in achieving the primary goal, that is to defeat your own handicap. Today, I am playing with a 21 handicap. Still very high for me at this stage, but I found it to be an advantage. Playing with a higher handicap has the higher chance of winning a golf game compare to those with a lower handicap. Anyway, in golf, one do not compete against the other players, but against his own handicap. This is the only game that who ever got the lowest score, win the game, sounds a bit awkward, but it's true, lowest score wins.

Another thing that I love about golf, is that you have to walk the fairway while striking your ball from one place to another until you holed it out on holes provided in every putting green. There are 18 putting greens in every golf courses that differ in distances from the teeing mound to the said putting greens. Imagine the very long distance you have to walk while playing the game. It is indeed a very healthy exercise for the heart.

Motorcycles

Gray BikeThe next hobby that I love is riding motorcycle. I had my first bike in Makati City, in 1982. I bought a Kawasaki Z400 Limited Edition from a friend. It is a 400 cc four stroke street bike colored green. This is also the same bike me and Maria Theresa used when we roamed the busy streets of Manila and Makati City, when I was courting her. I sold the bike when we decided to live together in 1987.

Here in Cagayan de Oro City, I bought my second bike. It was a Kawasaki KMX-125 off-road bike. This one is also a very fast bike and can endure an extremely long distance trip since it is water-cooled. What is not so nice about the KMX125; it is a 2-stroke engine motorcycle that uses 2T oil to lubricate the cylinder head when running. This creates messy oil spilling out of the exhaust system. When you're riding on a fast mode, the used 2T oil sprays out in the air from the exhaust system and will spill all over your clothes. That made me decided to sell the bike. Then again, I bought another bike. It's the Yamaha YBR125G; a 4-stroke engine that is designed for street riding and long tours. I named it "Angel." With Angel, I have been to different places in Mindanao island and as far as the Boracay Island in Aklan. Today I still have Angel, and I am contemplating of selling it, because I have another bike. A bigger one that I named "Gabriel," the mean-machine. It is a Yamaha FZ16 153cc 4-stroke motorcycle. Like Angel, me and Gabriel traveled a lot from Cagayan de Oro City and to all parts of Mindanao. Oh, how I really love riding. I still remember when I was just a kid asking for my grandfather to buy me a motorcycle, where he keeps promising to do so but failed. Now, riding is a part of me, I was born to ride. I am a rider and a rider, I will always be.

Weight Training

My PictureWhen I got into college, my first physical fitness subject was weight training. From then on, it has been a part of my physical activities but in an off and on basis since I also play basketball. I have been used to enrolling to gyms more or less 7 months on and nearly 8 to a year off. I managed to continue doing this kind of set up until now. Then, I finally decided to buy my own equipment and do the exercises at home. I bought two pairs of dumbbells, a sit-up board, some plates, a kettle bell, and a stationary bike. I also built my own pull-up bar right at the corner of my bedroom. There, I can work-out anytime I want to. However, I only do light weight training since I am not up to bulking up like a professional body builder. All I want is to have a balance and symmetrical body shape. I do the chest and the triceps during Monday and Thursday; back muscles and triceps during Tuesdays and Friday; and the legs and the arms during Wednesday and Saturday. I also do a lot of sit-ups; doing 3 sets of forty every work-out to keep myself healthy and far from getting sick. Sundays are my rest days. Again, the same on and off set up continues, like at present, it is my 7th month off in weight training. Do you know why? I discovered a new training exercise that I now love doing most...and that is swimming.

Swimming

My PictureMy newly found love is swimming. I find it easier to provide the physical fitness that my body needs. It is less strenuous to the bones, and it also hones and shapes the muscles' parts of our body. And one is going to love this wonderful exercise because you will enjoy the feeling you get in the water. The connection with the mind and the body to the water is one awesome experience. It is like yoga, a meditation for the mind, the body and the soul, while you listen to the water and enjoy floating, gliding, and propelling yourself towards the other end of the pool. It soothes and eases your mind from stress, and you forgot what it is like on land where more effort is being exerted to continue moving on.

During my first 2 months, I barely can finish more than 50 meters freestyle without taking a rest. I get so exhausted earlier before I get to the other end of the pool on the 50th meter. My endurance went to increase as the months go by. And now, on my 7th months in swimming, I can already finish 600 meters of continued freestyle without resting. Then followed by another 500 meters of breaststroke with 20 seconds rest every 100 meters; 500 meters butterfly with 30 seconds rest every 50 meters for the first 100 and 20 seconds rest on the next 25 meters and on. Then, I will do 100 meters freestyle with hand paddles; followed by a 100 meters freestyle with paddles and fins; a 100 meters freestyle with fins only; then a 100 meters under-water dolphin kick with fins and finally, a 200 meters slow phase freestyle to cool down followed by a 100 meters walk in the pool. This is my present swimming work out routine from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday becomes my rest days. And during these two days, I always long for the next Monday to come soon...I highly recommend this exercise to everybody, young and adult alike.
