| DEVELOP: How can I more effectively manage people? Managing people is a difficult thing to do. You need to be consistent on the job. You need to stand behind your decisions and apply them to all workers. As a manger you need to get feedback from you workers. The feedback will help you become a better manager. You need to accept criticism. No one is perfect, and you can learn from constructive criticism. Remember, as a manager you will doing your fair share of critiquing! Listen to your employees, be sensitive and remember what people tell you. It is also important to set deadlines. Set deadlines that are reasonable and timely. Have effective consequences for deadlines that are not met. Follow these deadlines for yourself. Your rules need to be consistent with the rules of your co-workers for most things. Act as a mentor. Mentor your staff to continue learning and growing. Also, control your anger! Remember you are working with people, not machinery. Uncover the problem areas and work to repair them rather than yelling or getting angry. Being a good manager really involves modeling the appropriate behavior for a healthy and safe working environment. |
