What is empowerment? Empowerment is a complex, multi-dimensional social process that facilitates people in their quest to gain control over their own lives. It is important to recognize that empowerment is multi-dimensional, social, and is a process. Empowerment involves having access to informatiion and resources, having choices with a range of options, being assertive, being hopeful, thinking critically, expressing frustrations, feeling you belong to a group, and the continues possibility for growth and development.

DEVELOP:
How can you increase your workplace empowerment?
You can increase empowerment in your workplace by fully understanding the definition and its multi-dimensional components. Once you understand the basics you can be pro-active and set the stage for success. You can help your employees demonstrate their solid decision-making abilities by allowing them to stand by their decisions. Through this demonstration they will eventually have access to more information and resources. Encourage assertiveness! If your employees want something, tell them to go for it! Emphasize that they, as individuals, can make a difference and effect change in their job and in their lives. Encourage critical thinking and seeing other people�s perspectives. Allow your employees to express their frustration in socially appropriate ways, employee functions are a great example! And finally be sure to encourage growth and learning!
