| DEFINE: What are feedback components? Getting feedback on the job involves increasing or decreasing instances of behaviors. This can be done through the usage of positive and negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement occurs when a consequence is presented dependent on a behavior, the behavior occurence increases, and the behavior is more likely to occur because and only because the consequence is presented dependent on the successful completion of a given behavior. Positive reinforcement is a type of feedback that is enouraging, contributes to growth, and give employees something to look forward to. Negative reinforcement is another type of feedback. Negative reinforcement involves removing something from a person's environment to increase a behavior. An example is a manager nagging an employee all day to clean up his/her work station. When the station is cleaned the nagging stops. Negative reinvorcement involves avoidance and escaping behaviors. Positive reinforcemnt is a better choice because it incourages growth and intrinsic motivation rather than the worker simply avoiding the aversive elements. |

| DEVELOP: How can you increase the use and effectively implement positive reinforcement? Keep the contingencies consistent! Reward and reinforce specific behaviors and make those rewards timely. The rewards are contingent on the successful completion of a target behavior. Avoid negative reinforcement. All that teaches the employee is to avoid and escape you! It does increase instances of specific behaviors, but positive reinforcement will be more long lasting. Keep the reinforcement rules consistent across employees. Do not favor certain employees over others. Make sure it is clear how to earn the praise/reward. Keep all of the rules clear and follow them for successful increases in desired behaviors. |
