| DEVELOP: How can I become a more effective leader? Becoming a better leader involves establishing structure, but not over-controlling. Establishing structure involves applying just enough energy and attention to shift behavior to a desired direction. It does not require complete control or exertion of all energies and resources. Not over-controlling can be very difficult for some managers. Being a leader involves letting employees, who are adults and should be treated as such, make decisions for themselves and have some power. Not controlling to much and letting go of control can be very difficult but will show others and yourself that you are innovative, that you challenge the ordinary, and that you do have your own perspective. Hopefully modeling these behaviors will increase them in others. |
