Whenever possible, planning your meal beforehand is most desirable -- not only to ensure that it is nutrionally balanced, but also that you have taken peoples' likes and dislikes into consideration.
Also, it is a good idea to think about any wine or other refreshment which is to accompany your meal, as this can either make it or break it!
