Genus Ateles
The Spider monkey lacks underfur and may be the colors:
- golden
- red
- buffs
- brown
- black
Their hands are like hooks. They have narrow palms, long curved fingers, and no thumb. Their limbs as well as tail are much longer in relation to its body, and the head is small. They live in troops of 2-8 individuals
Spider monkeys live in tropical forest regions which are located:
- in Southern Mexico
- Bolivia
- Matto Grosso in Brazil
1. A Spider monkey's diet consists mainly of leaves, but does include fruit, and flowers.
2. Life expectancy is 25 years.
3. Baby monkeys are carried on mother's abdomen for the first four months. Then it is carried on her back.
4. Each social group are actually units of a larger band of monkeys (about 15-25 animals.).
5. Each band inhabits an area of the forest that is near food and supplies.
6. The Spider monkey's tail is used as a fifth limb.
7. They are able to grasp objects with their foot, hand, or tail alone.
8. The end of their tails are flexible. It acts as a hand and even contains skin with grooves on it.
9. They dwell in the trees and rarely go on the ground.
10. Two subspecies of Spider monkeys are listed as endangered. They are found in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
