Genus Ceropithecus aethiops
The Vevet monkey is a small, black-faced monkey with an olive green or gray body. It's face, ears, feet and tip of tail are black. The Vervet is a medium sized monkey that may weigh up to 17 pounds. It's main habitat is located in East Africa. They mainly live up in the trees that are along sreams and rivers. They eat and sleep and barely leave their trees to wonder on the ground by foot.
The Vervet's diet consists of leaves, fruit, bark, bulbs, and grass. Their predators include:
- leopards
- caracals
- servals
- baboons
- large birds such as eagles
- crocodiles
- pythons
1. A Vervet's arms and legs are about the same length.
2. They live in social groups (called troops) of 10-50 .
3. The social groups mainly consist of adult females and their young.
4. They spend several hours a day grooming themselves.
5. A baby Vervet will spend the first 3 weeks of his life clinging on to his mother's stomach.
6. When in danger, they are known for chirping and chittering. They will scream and and yell if the danger is tremendous.
7. They are good climbers, jumpers, and swimmers.
8. Vervets can easily adapt to different environments.
9. When Vervets live around people, they can become pests. They may steal food and other items from the people.
10. The dominant individuals in each troop are groomed the most. Rules for feeding, fighting, friendships and even survival are decided by the hierarchical system- Which individuals are dominant?.
