Genus Nasalis larvatus
Proboscis monkeys are known for their gigantic nose and large bellies. They obtain their bellies from eating a lot of leaves, which makes up their diet. Male Proboscis monkeys grow to be 70 cm tall and weigh 24 kg. Females are smaller, growing to be 60 cm tall and having a weight of 12 kg.
Proboscis monkeys live in a region called Borneo and prefer environments such as:
- rainforests of lowlands
- mangrove-forest located at river mouths
They live in trees and live in a social group from about 10-30 animals.
1. Proboscis monkeys spend a lot of time eating leaves to obtain the right amount of nutrients.
2. Thier tails are as lon as thier bodies.
3. Their fur is brick red, their cheeks are bright and their arms and legs are greyish.
4. They have a long nose shaped like a cucumber.
5. They travel rapidly by swinging tree to tree, but are also very skilled running on all fours.
6. They swing in trees when they have to cross rivers or escape danger.
7. If they are trapped by a predator, then they drop themselves in to the river. They are very good swimmers.
8. The adult male is very aggressive towards other memners of other social groups.
9. There are usually 2 adult males in every group.
10. To show anger and threat, the Proboscis monkey will make a lot of fuss such as brake branches and yell.
