Monkeys are small mammals that are very intelligent. In fact they are among the highest order of mammals classified as "primates." There are approximately 200 species of monkeys most of which live in tropical regions such as:

Central America
South America
Africa
Asia

Some species of Monkeys spend their entire lives living in forests up in the trees while others spend thier lives roaming the ground in savannas.Savannas may be found in regions such as Africa and may be defined by thier grassy lands and scattered trees.

Monkeys are classified by scientists in to two major groups:

New World monkeys

Monkeys that live in Central and South America
They have nostrils that are spaced widely apart
They have 36 teeth
They can grasp objects with their tails

Old World Monkeys

Monkeys that live in Africa and Asia
They have nostrils that are very close together
They have 32 teeth
They can not grasp objects with their tail

1. The big toe of a monkey looks and acts like a thumb.

2. A monkey's tail provides balance for running and jumping.

3. Monkeys depend more on their eyes than their nose to gather information about their surroundings.

4. Monkey's feet are larger and stronger than their hands.

5. Monkeys that live on the ground have shorter tails than the monkeys that live in trees.

6. Monkeys use their tail as an air brake to help slow themselves down while leaping from tree to tree.

7. Most Old World monkeys have cheek pouches which alow them to store food temporarily.

8. All species of monkeys live together in a social group.

9. A monkey may threaten members of his group by opening his mouth and showing his teeth.

10. Most Species of Monkeys give birth to only one baby monkey at a time.
