Club History The Rotary Club of Lancaster-Sherman was chartered in October 1985 with the presiding formalities being shared by Charlie King, President of the sponsoring Rotary Club of Lancaster, and the new Rotary Club of Lancaster-Sherman's first president, Dick Scamehorn. The high point of the evening was the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Bill Dagger, a member of the Lancaster Club and the driving force which made the new club a reality. The club was enthusiastically active in 1987 under President John Snyder in support of Rotary International's Polio Plus campaign. Eight Sherman Rotarians became Paul Harris Fellows in support of the campaign. In 1989 the club had its first major fundraiser, Rotary Roses. The club netted $3,000. The fundraiser continued in 1990 and 1991. In February 1991, the club had its first formal dinner-dance. Unfortunately, a blizzard struck the night of the dance and just 11 hardy members and their spouses were able to make it. In 1993 the club supported two children for summer camping at Camp NuHop. Then in 1994 the club participated in the reconstructing and redecorating the interior of the Lancaster United Cerebral Palsy Center. In 1994 the club began the Rotary Santa program. The club identified three needy families and Rotary Santa Marty Harris delivered a huge pile of gifts to each household. In the fall of 1995 the club painted the Maywood Mission's Quonset Hut. It was the most challenging project undertaken by the club. The huts round shape prevented the use of ladders and members used wall metal corrugations as toe-hold to reach the top. In 1997-1998 the club became a major financial backer of the proposed statue-memorial to Lancaster's famous Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman. Unfortunately, this project depleted the club's cash resources for the next three years. Looking for a new community service project in 1998-1999, the club began participating in the Adopt-A-Highway on US 33-South. The statue of General William T. Sherman was erected in the summer of 1999 in the downtown city park opposite the bandstand. The club's membership is proud to have been a part of the project. In March of 2000, the club had it's most successful Rotary Night At The Races fundraiser. The club supported Operation Smile, The Lighthouse Shelter, Camp NuHop, The West School Tutoring Program & The Youth Exchange Program. In 2001-2002, the club added a 2nd Major Fundraiser, thanks to Vic Sabo, the Holiday Wreath Sales which served to rebuild the club's cash resources. The club continued to support the 2000-2002 programs, established The Fred And Margie Hatcher Endowment Fund, added the Montana de Luz Project, sponsored a horse at the Helping Hooves Therapeutic Riding Center, implemented a Middle-School Student Recognition Program and Public and Private Sector Service Awards. Club membership grew 16%. In 2005, to mark the 100 years of Rotary, the club presented a check to the Sherman House to help implement an interactive light and sound exhibit for the Sherman Tent Room. The Sherman House was just a recipient of the “Save Our History” award from Time-Warner. In October of that same year, Lancaster Sherman Rotary celebrated its 20th anniversary marked by a dinner & entertainment at the Elks. In 2006, the club embarked on it's first Membership Drive called "March For Membership" which saw the club grow by 4 members (15% Increase). Under President Tara Craaybeek's leadership, the club structure was reorganized under the Rotary International's Club Leadership Plan.
