The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs.

The Foundation's Programs fund Rotary club and district projects to improve the quality of life, providing health care, clean water, food, education and other essential needs primarily in the developing world.

One of the major Humanitarian Programs is PolioPlus, which seeks to eradicate the polio virus worldwide.  Through its Educational Programs, the Foundations provides funding for some 1200 students to study abroad each year.  Grants are also awarded to university teachers to teach in developing countries and for exchanges of business and professional people.  Former participants in the Foundation's programs have the opportunity to continue their affiliation with Rotary as Foundation Alumni.

About PolioPlus

In 1985, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program to protect children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio. Since that time, Rotary's efforts and those of partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world, have achieved a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide.

Rotarians stand at the brink of a great victory and look forward to celebrating the global eradication of polio.

Ambassadorial Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program is Ambassadorial Scholarships. Since 1947 nearly 37,000 men and women from 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. More than 1,000 scholarships were awarded for study in 2003-04. Through grants totaling approximately US$428 million, recipients from some 70 countries studied in more than 70 nations.

Humanitarian Grants Program

The Humanitarian Grants Program of The Rotary Foundation provides grants to Rotary clubs and districts to implement humanitarian projects. There are several grant types that address different service needs and funding options.

 Other Rotary International Programs

Rotary Youth Exchange

The most powerful force in the promotion of international understanding and  peace is exposure to different cultures. The world becomes a smaller, friendlier place when we learn that all people — regardless of nationality — desire the same basic things: a safe, comfortable environment that allows for a rich and satisfying life for our children and ourselves. Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people with the opportunity to meet people from other lands and to experience their cultures. This plants the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding.

Interact Clubs

Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people ages 14-18. The program gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends.

Rotaract Club

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are usually community-based or university-based and are sponsored by a local Rotary club making them true "partners in service" and key members of the Rotary family.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), Rotary's training program for young leaders, emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth.

Rotary Fellowships

As of 1 July 2005, the Rotary Fellowships program belongs to a new parent entity known as Global Networking Groups. The new entity includes groups of individual Rotarians organized to focus on shared topics of interest on an international basis.

Rotary Community Corps (RCC)

A Rotary Community Corps (RCC) is a group of non-Rotarian men and women who share Rotarians' commitment to service. Under the guidance of a sponsoring Rotary club, dedicated RCC members put their own skills to work to improve the quality of life in their communities.

World Community Service (WCS)

World Community Service has been described as the "quiet revolution of hope."

Rotary Volunteers

The Rotary Volunteers program seeks to promote international understanding and peace through three goals:

Increasing awareness among Rotarians and non-Rotarians of volunteer opportunities in their own and other communities;
Assisting clubs and districts in developing community service projects that address the critical needs of their communities; and
Fostering fellowship and goodwill between Rotarians and their communities initiated through volunteer activities.
