DEFINITION OF ROTARY Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are approximately 1.2 million Rotarians, members of more than 29,000 Rotary clubs in 161 countries. HOW WE SERVE Contrary to common misconceptions, Rotary is neither a fellowship club nor a business contact club. Rotary is a SERVICE CLUB. This is evidenced by Rotary's Motto "Service Above Self." Through Rotarian's working together with a commitment to serve, the natural byproducts of Fellowship and making good contacts are automatically achieved. The routes whereby Rotarian's achieve service above self are called: AVENUES OF SERVICE |

CLUB SERVICE This backbone of Rotary addresses those responsibilities that each member undertakes for the well-being of the club. These include attendance, serving on club committees, promoting fellowship and seeking out new candidates to propose for membership. The strength of the club depends upon each member's commitment to this first "Avenue of Service."

COMMUNITY SERVICE Sometimes called the heartbeat of Rotary, encompasses all the activities that Lancaster-Sherman Rotarians undertake to improve the quality of life for all people within our club's territory. |

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE According to Rotary's classification principle, members join Rotary as the representative of their particular business or profession. This gives our Rotarians the dual responsibility of representing their vocation with the club and of exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace, and obliges us to view our respective occupations as an opportunity to serve society.

|
VOCATIONAL SERVICE Rotarians work to develop and maintain friendly, peaceful relations in a troubled world. Rotary's programs approach this goal in two ways - by assisting projects of clubs and districts abroad and by facilitating contact and exchanges between individual Rotarians and clubs in different countries.
