Practices: It depends on the team, the cadet commander of that team, and where they are in the school year, but typically, competition teams, other than PT and Academic, will practice as much as every day except Wednesdays (PI - Personnel Inspection - days). Practices are frequent so that at field meets all moves are exact, clean, crisp, and flawless. Requirements: Students
must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA for the previous semester in order to be
eligible to participate in field trips or on one of the competition teams.
Competition Teams at LMHS Drill Teams The Unarmed Drill Team concentrates on predetermined synchronized marching maneuvers, with a goal of flawlessly executing them as one entity at field meets. Flawless, means that everything is taken into account, including: staying in step (the length of their steps; when their feet hit the ground); how high they raise their feet and hands; when, how and how far they turn when changing direction; when and how far they turn their heads, etc. The Armed Drill Team's goal is also to achieve flawless team performance of predetermined routines at field meets. The major difference is that they add rifle maneuvers to the precision marching. Rifle maneuvers include: throwing, catching, twisting, twirling and just about anything else you can think of, short of firing, them (though they are real rifles, they can not fire). Armed Drill team members can also compete as individuals in field meets, executing another predetermined set of maneuvers.
The Color Guard's predetermined routines revolve around the presenting of (carrying) and the protecting of (with rifles) our colors (our flags). Again, the goal is flawless execution of these routines. The Color Guard at Lake Mary high school performs in various activities as well as field meet competitions. Color Guard routinely presents the colors at the opening of our home football games during our National Anthem. They travel to elementary and middle schools, as well as businesses. They were part of the opening ceremony for the extension of the Greenway, and at the dedication of the memorial at the entrance of the Sanford Airport. They also open school ceremonies including National Honor Society inductions, Miss Lake Mary pageant, and graduation.
The Physical Training teams compete for the relative physical fitness of the competing units. Physical fitness tests are performed on the day of the field meet. Competition typically covers, sit ups, pushups, and running relay races. Portions of the PT competition are held in the hosting school's cafeteria, gym, or some other appropriate space, relay races (1000 yd relay, 2.5 mi relay) are usually held in the school stadium.
The Academic Teams compete to determine which unit can produce the highest score on a test administered on the day of the field meet. Tests cover any and all of the information in the orange cadet manuals. This portion of a field meet is also typically held somewhere inside the hosting school: a classroom, library, auditorium, etc.
The Orienteering Teams compete at separate field meets from the Academic, PT, Color Guard and Drill teams. They compete in fields or woods, with maps and compasses. Their goal is to find and arrive at predetermined points in the shortest time possible.
The Air Rifle Teams also compete separately from the organized field meets of the Academic, PT Color Guard and Drill teams. They spend their practices learning to precision shoot in any of 3 positions: standing, kneeling or laying down. Though they have a limited time in which to shoot, the goal of the Air Rifle Team is to be as precise as possible, rather than as fast as possible. They have scheduled dates and times when their official performance is recorded. This is then matched up against the other JROTC units. |
