Summer Leadership
Often called "Mini Boot Camp", LMHS's NJROTC Summer
Leadership is a week long day camp held each summer. It is an
optional but highly recommended activity attended by both new "recruits" and returning cadets.
For
new recruits, Summer Leadership provides a "head start", crash
course, in much of what will be taught in their Naval Science 1 class:
discipline, marching commands and maneuvers, how to care for their uniforms,
etc. It's built around a true "boot camp like" experience,
and is a great opportunity to see what the JROTC program can be like. Returning
cadets are provided with re-enforcement of their previous year's instruction,
and varying degrees of leadership and
responsibility.
The camp gives both new
recruits and returning cadets the
opportunity to advance in rank. This means that new recruits would enter
their first year of JROTC as a Seaman Apprentice rather than a Seaman Recruit (as
they begin to advance in rank, starting out one step ahead begins to make a big
difference!).
This day camp strives to provide a true "mini boot
camp" experience, complete with a full uniform graduation. Many cadets
say that their best experiences in JROTC include the Mini Boot Camps.
If you are
attending Summer Leadership / mini bootcamp for the first time, the
information below may help answer some common questions:
 |
Hair should be
cut relatively short: "bulk" on the top should be no more
than 2", sideburns should not extend beyond the notch in your
ear, and the hair in the back cannot touch your collar. If you
need a haircut, you'll be told on the first day. |
 |
Arrive at the school no later than
8:00 each day. |
 |
Arrive in white t-shirt, black
athletic shorts and running shoes. Returning cadets should
wear their PT gear. |

Leadership Academy
Rising Juniors have the opportunity to attend the Area 7 Leadership Academy. This is an
overnight camp, held at Farragut Military Academy in St. Petersburg,
FL. This academy is held during the summer months, and gives cadets who
are physically fit, have a good academic history, and show leadership
ability, the training and experience necessary to become leaders within their
school's NJROTC unit. Cadets are hand picked, and then they compete for the few
available slots.
Those who go are considered to be the top cadets in the state
of Florida.
If you are chosen to fill one of our school's
billets, the information below may help answer some of your last minute questions:
