Lanes
and Splashes I'll be damned, Lost and Searching more like! I myself have to
apologise for being late for last month's run; having risked three points on my
license and still arrived late, I took my life in my hands by asking all the
evening strollers whether a group of motorbikes had passed by.... I took the
proper turns through Scorton but clearly missed the plot from there on out. I
did however have a lovely ride out over Abbeystead and Calder Vale only to meet
up with Pat heading the other way towards the pub....Ah sanctuary. Such a good
evening I had that I did make the water splash after the pint, and then ran dry
of fuel and ended up pushing from the University traffic lights to the Scotforth
Rd. Texaco garage, and it's definitely uphill all the way.....gasp....
Sixteen
stout and hardy men (and lady) and machines ventured out from the Little Chef,
and by fair means or foul seventeen landed safely back at the Holly for a natter
and a jar. It was nearly only sixteen that left the Holly though, one bedraggled
(V-twin wannabee ?) 500cc Duke decided that it would rather stay at the pub, at
least for a few minutes more....
The
'drop off' system which we all know and love so well failed again, but it did
make for some interesting conversation ( and accusation) and I think on the
whole a good ride out was had by all and our thanks go out to Chris for the
endeavour....who's turn next ?
THE DROP OFF SYSTEM
(Pre-mobile 'phone system)
The leader of the run remains
at the FRONT of the pack and the tail end Charlie remains at the REAR of the
pack. When the leader reaches a junction such that a turn is made off the route
you're travelling, the leader points to the side of the road or signals by some
other means and the next rider stops at the junction to direct all other riders
down the correct route. Nobody drops off at junctions off the main road if
you're not actually taking that junction, so always carry straight on unless
flagged to turn.
When all riders have passed
successfully, the dropped off rider re-joins the other immediately in front of
the tail end Charlie, who remains at the REAR of the group. The rotation goes on
until the end of the run at which point every one arrives safely. The tail end
Charlie is made aware of the route in general, or at least the final destination
so that if anything untoward happens along the way he can report back.
Failing
any other notification I have organised a 'What's in the bag' quiz for
Wednesday's meeting at the Scarthwaite House Hotel 7.30 for 8.00pm.
