My curriculum vitae
I have qualifications to work in a couple of interconnected professions. My basic education makes me a librarian and I was working as one until the end of March 2004, in the Hmeenlinna City Library. To be exact, I was the acting head of the Adult Literature department and my main responsibilites included the online catalog, our web services, cooperation with local schools and teaching library usage to high school students, personnel training, and supervising the reference desk.
During my five years at the University of Tampere I was also educated to be a researcher and a teacher/lecturer. I have a doctorate in Social Sciences (Information Studies to be exact) and I am a published researcher but I decided not to pursue a career in research apart from occasional lectures and surveys that I conduct for fun. My doctoral thesis was about communication and information seeking in an organization; I am glad I have been able to use that theoretical knowledge for PR and communications work at the library.
My last but not least profession is that of designing web pages and contents for various multimedia. I enjoy designing as a hobby too, and have been able to use this very useful skill in my day job. I am a HTML purist (you can get the girl out of the Unix environment, but not Unix out of the girl!), loving to write the code by hand but able to use DreamWeaver, HomeSite and other editors as well. JavaScript is fun, and I would love to learn programming thoroughly.
I speak Finnish, Swedish, English, some German and some Russian, and make more or less educated guesses in a few other languages as well. My favorite language - that I don't speak - is Slovak. That country is a little-known gem in the heart of Europe.
