Books
I am a librarian; ergo, I love books and like to monitor current literature. Starting to work at a library was intoxicating at first because there were so many books around and I had so little time. I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction; illustrated coffee-table books and colorless books with small, thick print.
At the moment I am reading Richard Preston's "The Cobra Event". It is an interesting hybrid between a novel and a non-fiction account of biological weapons. Some descriptions of the symptoms of brain pox are quite disgusting, and despite the fact that some scenes in the book seem outdated (it came out in 1997, after all), it seems convincing and well-researched. Some Amazon readers are complaining about a stupid ending, but I haven't gotten there yet. Meanwhile, I am also planning to start "The Black Tower" by P. D. James, as soon as the book gets less stinky. Literally. I found it in the basement of Phil's previous house.
I am also reading some books by Calvin Miller, working my way through "Once Upon a Tree", but frankly, I prefer his poetic works. I am rather disappointed in the way he emphasizes our commitment to God in this book, rather than God's commitment to us. Some of his exhortations come dangerously close to legalism and work-it-out-yourself Christianity. Meanwhile, I've discovered Eugenia Price. I'd never heard of her until our church gave away some old books. She is very thoughtful and I feel like I'm reading a soul sister's musings.
