Angkor Wat, deep in Combodia, is the funeral monument of king Suryawarman II, built in the middleof the 12th century CE. it is one of the largest religious buildings in the world. At Angkor, enormous block of buff, ochre and pink sandstone were used to construct a huge religious complex, consosting of temples, terraces, towers and lakes. The structures were built without the use of the mortar, and are covered with carvings which appear to grow from the very stone themeselves. The carving devict gods, goddesss, scenes from history and stores from the epic Sanskrit poem, the Ramayana. The Shwe Dagon Pagoda near Rangoon, in Burma, is a shrine containing relics of Buddha. This sacred site is topped with many extraordinary gilded pagodas, and contains a remarkable 43-ton bell, one of the largest in the Far East.
