Within India, Buddhism gradually come to be assimilated into Hindu practice which has let to its virtual disappearance there as a separate religion. Now the greatest flowering of Buddhism is outside India. Buddhism, especially Zen and Vajrayana, has flourished in the West in recent decades, and in Europe, the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and the work of the Theosophical Sociaty have halped to bring about a greater awareness of Buddhism. Western followers find the Buddhist teaching offer a particular wisdom not available in their own culture, especially in their aspects of tolerance, non-violence and conpassin for all being.
