SPORTS AND LEISURE FACILITIES

The lac de la Triouzoune is renowned locally for its superb warm water conditions, with summer water temperatures regularly reaching 25°C. Air temperatures in summer commonly exceed 30°C and early morning waterskiers will find the water steaming. Waterskiing is only one of the many watersports on offer: sailing, windsurfing, swimming and simply splashing about are also well provided for at centres around the lake.

Les Genêts shares a private jetty with its neighbours, which is primarily for mooring boats, and you can enjoy a swim in the sheltered cove alongside. There is a platform for diving and sunbathing and a sloping beach area where children can safely paddle.

WINDSURFING
There is a windsurfing school at Neuvic-Plage just north of l'Hôtel du Lac where windsurfers may be hired with or without tuition. Guests who wish to bring their own windsurfers may store them in the utility room.

SAILING
There are sailing schools at Antiges and Aubignac.

SWIMMING
Swimming is safe round the perimiter of the lake and off the islands as long as you watch out for power boats. There is a sandy beach hear Neuvic-Plage, and of course you can swim from the lakeside just below Les Genêts.

RIDING
Neuvic has a well-equipped riding school and there is a network of bridle paths and tracks as well as roads which take you through the peaceful wooded heart of France with breathtaking views of river valleys and mountains.

GOLF
Golfers will find two challenging 9-hole courses near l'Hôtel du Lac. We hardly dare mention it in the same paragraph, but there is also mini-golf beside the hotel!!

TENNIS
There are nine courts of a good standard available for hire either in Neuvic or within 5 or 6 kilometres.

FISHING
The area around Neuvic is a fisherman's paradise, with large rivers such as the Dordogne within a few kilometres as well as smaller fast-flowing streams where trout abound. The Lac de la Triouzoune itself offers numerous secluded spots for fishing and is very popular with local anglers. Licences are essential and may be obtained from the Syndicat d'Initiative (Tourist Information Office).

Neuvic is the venue for the annual national Concours de Coqs De Pêche which takes place each May.

SNOW SKIING
Winter temperatures even in Neuvic, 624m above sea level, can drop as low as -20°C and the nearest of the ski slopes of the Massif Central are only 60kms away. Among the best known resorts are Le Montdore and Super-Besse onthe slopes of the Puy de Sancy and Super-Lioran at the foot of the Plomb du Cantail.

NB: These resorts are well worth a visit in the summer as well - there are numerous attractions such as cable cars and summer luges and they are a good base for exploring the spectacular volcanic peaks of the Auvergne. On a clear day it is said you can see as far as Mont Blanc from the top of the highest peaks, and closer at hand the ground is carpeted with alpine flowers.

QUAD BIKING, JET SKIING, WATER SCOOTERS AND PEDALOES
There is a quad biking circuit at Antiges beside a small beach open to the public, where jet skis, water scooters and pedaloes can also be hired. Those of you who feel a bit less energetic can sit in the shade with a cool drink from the restaurant.

WATER SKIING
Private boats may be launched and retrieved from the slipway in the marina, which is next to l'Hôtel du Lac at Neuvic-Plage. These must first be registered with

Club Motonautique
c/o Jean-Claude Potronnat
Route d'Ussel
19160 Neuvic

Tel: 55 95 89 28

This is the local garage, petrol station and Renault dealer as well as a highly recommended marine engineer.

A valid certificate of marine insurance must be shown, and all boat drivers must hold a Helmsman's (Overseas) Certificate of Competence. This can be obtained from:

The Royal Yachting Association
RYA House
Romsey Road
Eastleigh
Hampshire
SO5 4YA

Tel: 01703 629962

The local Gendarmes, Marine Division, patrol the lake most days and you may be asked to produce your insurance and helmsman's certificate, so you are advised to take these with you whenever you go out.

In the interests of safety, rules apply to all users of the lake in order to separate the different water sports - each must keep to its own zone. These rules change from time to time and you are advised to ask Jean-Claude Potronnat for up-to-date details when you go to register your craft.

Jean-Claude also operates a water skiing centre (ski nautique) from the pontoon next to l'Hôtel du Lac. This runs most days: two inboard/outdrive boats are used and basic ski tuition is offered to beginners.

There is also a private slalom course and jump, owned and maintained by Jackie Bauldry, a former French water ski champion and French team captain, also French veteran champion. Experienced skiers may apply to use this facility.

NB The cove and jetty at Manzagol are not in a skiing zone.
