Southwoods

Poetry is the solace of the heartbroken.

When we parted ways that April afternoon
We should have kept to our individual itineraries
You should have stayed at the mall
To wait for your mama
I should have gone straight home to sleep

Instead, we decided to meet again
Just thirty minutes after the last goodbye

Could we have averted sin
Had I declined your request
To borrow my VCD's
Had you declined my invitation
To play some tennis

No one ever told us
Not to mix VCD's, tennis and bodies in lust

Flesh touching flesh
We gave in to the urge
As we traversed
The seemingly endless expressway
In search of release

Did we really find it
On that lonely stretch of road

In the aftermath of passion
I could still taste you in my mouth
Still smell you on my shirt
Still feel your presence in my car
Ghosts of a one day love affair

That no amount of exorcism
Could eliminate from my memory
