Here's what I currently carry:

1) Detector (obviously)
2) Spade - short handled.
3) Mobile phone.
4) Spare Batteries.
5) Earphones.
6) Finds box. (Size of a cigarette case, put in the mucky stuff so you keep clean pockets)
7) Digital camera
8) Wallet - depending on area

Here's what I used to carry.
As above plus:

1) Spare earphones
2) Spare plastic trowel
3) Extra spare batteries
4) 4" flick knife
5) Mini first aid kit
6) Bungee harness
7) 11" probe (A what?? See the picture below)
8) Survival tool (mirror, torch, monocular and compass in one)
9) Waterproof raincoat
10) Small bag for finds
11) Half a dozen carrier bags
12) Roll of food bags
13) Ordnance survey map for area.
14) At least 1 pack of chewing gum
15) Tweezers and Fingernail file for cleaning finds.

Ever wondered what a successful metal detectorist carries on his belt? Well I can't tell you about that but I can tell you what I normally carry.

The best advice I can give you is to carry as little as possible. I started out with very little, adding bits and bobs here and there and ended up with pocketfuls of stuff and a rucksack I hardly used.

Now ive gone the opposite and carry almost nothing apart from the essentials.
