Kimera   * 1/2

Frankly I can't say enough about this movie and all the reasons it's bad.  The art was only mediocre, which to me was a shame, it had so much potential going in.  But that was quickly lost to the convoluted story line and lame characters.  Two guys are driving down a road when they come to a road block.  They get out and start argueing with a very large man wielding an equally large weapon.  One guy (who is a lame ass with women apparently) wanders off just as they all start getting attacked.  He stumbles upon a cold storage unit that holds a sexless person (I will refer to it as a her since it seemed majoritivly to attract males to it, even though it could apparently impregnant females if it wanted to, and also had no breasts of any kind).  His friends father is, conveniently, the leading research scientist of the Kimera project.  The two guys break into the area where they are holding the cold storage thing.  The guy, stupidly, opens the storage unit and lets it out.  Then several monsters attack them and a really good looking guy, but one with obvious problems and a history with the Kimera (which turns out to be her name), turns up to destroy her or save her (it's not very clear).  Things happen, there's a semi-rape scene (which turned me off even further) and people go running about and finally end up in an old church where the final battle takes place.  It turns out that all three (Kimera, the nice looking guy, and the monster) are related to each other.  They are the last of a breed of aliens that are also vampires.  The monster wants Kimera to have lots of kids and then use them to destroy the world, the nice guy wants to kill Kimera (because back on their home world she begged him to and he loves her) and Kimera has become some kind of brainless wuss.  The ending is more than predictable.  The loser guy from the start of the show is supposed to kill Kimera, but instead he decides he loves her and spares her life and they live in the desert together, The End.  For a total running time of about 1 hour it sucked.  There was almost no characterization, no real plot development, no suspense created, and not for one moment do you think Kimera is really going to die.  Sad really, it did have so much potential.  Perhaps if it had been created as a 3 part OAV or similar it might have been good.  As it stands, spend your hard earned money on something else.

Blood   **
It was generally good.  The art work was excelent, the shading work was wonderful, and the blending of traditional cell work and CGI was seemless.  The story needed some help though.  A young girl (that's apparently not so young) works for the government killing vampire clone things.  She is a true vampire and for some reason doesn't like these beasts.  She wields a hella cool katana blade.  I was pretty impressed with this one, then I watched the credits roll by and realized with pain that there was no more.  It was a one shot deal.  So much potential for great storiness here, wasted because they didn't trouble themselves to do the rest of an obviously great and well designed world.  So sad.  This could have worked as a three part OAV so well, and then I wouldn't feel I had wasted $30 on a DVD that left me feeling empty and used. (Addendum - There is a TV series that picks up where this movie left off.  It has finally been exported to America.  YAY!)
