Hermit Crab World - A reliable hermit crab care information site

Hermit crabs use shells to protect their soft abdomen. This page tells you what kind of shells your hermit crabs will wear. Hermit crab wear the conch-like shells.

The shell must have a pretty big opening. It can't have a narrow one.

C. Compressus / Ecuardoians - Es like shells with D-shaped openings. Some examples of shells with D-shaped openings are: Natica tigrina, Natica lineata, Turbo petholatus, Whales Eye, Cassis vibex, Bursa rana, nerite, nerita scabricosta, T. tuberosa, T. mutabilis, Striped/Calf moon shell

Purple Pincher / C. clypeatus Clypeatus like shells with circular openings. An example of a shell with a circular opening is a turbo.

Straws / C. Perlatus - Straws like turbos and frogs. These are the ones with circular openings.

C. Cavipes / Cavs - Cavs like Babylonia, Aerolata, Land snail shells that are long and cone shaped, cancellaria shells.

All of the rest aren't specific.

The perfect-fitting shell will have an opening about the size of the large claw plus about 1/8" all around (for larger crabs it will be more) or 1/10" all around. You're ultimately looking for a shell whose entrance the crab will be able to plug with his or her large claw and far left walking leg.
