Day 1
Rigid Motion and Tessellations

Objectives:
         Students will be able to identify a reflections, rotations, and translations
         Students will be able to define rigid motion Students will be able to define isometry
         Students will be able to identify and create tessellations

Materials:
         Dot paper for tessellations
         Worksheet about tessellations

Activities:   (45 Minute class)
         Teacher defines terms and definitions with examples  (15 Min)
         Preimage:  original figure  (Show example of square

Image:  new figure  (Show continuation of example)

Preimage                Image

Transformation:  Operation the moves a preimage onto its image  (Relate to example)

--->

Preimage                Image

Rigid:  when a transformation maps every figure onto a congruent figure

--->

--->

Rigid

Not Rigid

Isometry: A transformation in the plane is an isometry if it preserves length  (A rigid transformation is called an isometry)

3 Types of Transformations:
          Reflections:  Show example and explain

Rotations:  Show example and explain

Translations:  Show example and explain

--->

         Practice as a class (15 Min)
                    p. 328 (1-16)
          Tessellations  (10 Min)
                    Show examples from textbook pp. 694,291,292
                    Go over hand out about creating the shape on dot paper
                    Students work on outside class and have the weekend to complete
                    Grading Rubric
                              Must cover entire sheet of paper
                              Must use color
                              Be as creative as possible (More credit for more elaborate)
                    Example of tessellation
          Closing  (5 Min)
                    Hand out dot paper
                    Students work on shapes for remaining class period

Assessment:
          Informal Listen to answers and questions during oral practice
                    Listen to questions during lecture on definition
          Formal
                    Grade Tessellations
                    Qu-est at the end of the chapter  (Quiz/Test)
