I lived in Chicago for seven years after graduating from college and moving away from Nashville, TN. It was and is the US' third largest city and coming right out of college, I thought it would be easy to get a job there.

Chicago can be a great place to live, for those who love big cities , lots of people and the hurried rush of life. It's also not terrible for those who prefer something quieter. Driving anywhere is a major hassle, though, and whenever I could, I took the El Train. At first I worked in the 'burbs at a small distributorship, then moved on to working downtown. It was a change in my life - taking the El every day, only driving once a week, learning to prepare for work and shopping by remembering that I could only get what I could carry since I didn't have a car to store things in all day.

With a city which has reached Critical mass and then some, Chicago had events and activites for everyone - I always say that a person could only be bored in the city if they wanted to be. And there really was no reason to be bored. For every event which didn't interest me, there had to be one or two which did.

I lived on the far north side of Chicago - I'm not really a city person and this was the neighborhood which was a little quieter, a little more pleasant in being residential, close to the EL and Lake Shore Drive, and easy enough to get out of the city (if I was headed north). Still, after five years, I knew it was about time to leave, although it would take another two years to escape. The city had become too... everything for me. Too many people, too hot, too cold, too dirty, too noisy... and finally a time came when I could move back to Minnesota or move out to the great unknown land of Seattle.
