The war instigated by Palpatine lasted for three years. He continued to show support for the Republic and its soldiers, but all the while was preparing for the final stages of his masterplan. The war ended with the death of Palpatine's apprentice, Dooku, at the hands of Anakin Skywalker. Palpatine had been offering young Skywalker advice since before the war began, leading him more and more away from the Jedi Order. They both respected each other, and Anakin learned much from the Chancellor, even adopting some of his views and opinions. Although Palpatine had agreed to relinquish his control over the Army of the Republic once the Clone Wars ended, he actually had no intention of giving up his soldiers. As they had been bred to obey orders without question - no matter how evil those orders may be - the clonetroopers aided in the rise of the Empire. Palpatine suddenly sealed himself away from the public backlash, and placed the Republic under martial law. He declared himself Emperor, and changed the galaxy forever. His clonetroopers became Imperial stormtroopers, and promising Republic officers such as Captain Tarkin became agents of evil in the Galactic Empire. Palpatine betrayed all, even turning the Jedi into traitors, and making them enemies of the Empire. Finally, he revealed himself to be Darth Sidious, Dark Lord of the Sith, when it was too late for anyone - not even Master Yoda - to challenge him. He also recruited Anakin Skywalker as his new apprentice: the dark side was strong in the young Jedi, and after a fierce battle with his mentor, Anakin fell completely from the light. He was badly injured in the fight, though Palpatine was able to sustain him - he could perhaps have healed him more, but Palpatine knew how powerful Anakin was, thus he ensured the boy would not betray his Master. Anakin became Darth Vader, completing Palpatine's transformation of the Republic. |
