| With his homeworld blockaded, many expected Palpatine to crumble, but in fact the crisis over Naboo was all part of his mysterious schemes. Palpatine had a tense working relationship with King Veruna of Naboo, but after he was assassinated, Naboo elected a new monarch. Palpatine found Queen Amidala easy to corrupt, and thought she would present little resistance to a blockade. However, she was rescued from the clutches of the Trade Federation by the Jedi, and fled Naboo. Eventually arriving on Coruscant, Amidala met with Palpatine. The Senator attempted to sway Amidala's fierce resolve to act quickly against the Federation, but she was determined to oust the Viceroy from her planet. However, Palpatine wrangled victory out of the situation by telling the young Queen a new Supreme Chancellor was needed. She sowed the seeds of Palpatine's ascent by calling for a vote of no-confidence in Chancellor Valorum, and thanks to Palpatine's earlier manipulations in the Senate, support for him to be Valorum's replacement was strong. Eventually, Amidala took back Naboo with the help of the Jedi and the Gungan army. Though Sidious lost his apprentice, Palpatine was nominated as Supreme Chancellor of the Republic. He attended the celebrations on Naboo, where he met young Anakin Skywalker. Sensing his potential through the Force, Palpatine vowed to watch him carefully - he decided he had found a replacement for Darth Maul. Though the Trade Federation had lost the battle, Sidious's plans were not harmed. Now only did the citizens of the Republic trusted Palpatine greatly, but the disgruntled Trade Federation wanted revenge on Amidala and the Republic. The seeds of rebellion against the government had been planted.... |
