| Ten years after his Chancellorship, Palpatine's Republic was facing crisis. The Seperatist movement had grown to encompass hundreds of star systems, and it appeared as if Palpatine was powerless to save the Republic. His term as Chancellor had actually been extended thanks to various troubles in the galaxy which forced him to stay on. Whether this was pure coincidence or careful planning on Palpatine's part was unknown. Whichever way, Palpatine knew he would not be resigning his role any time soon. He promised to employ peaceful methods to halt the Seperatists, and indeed, he was often in talks with the leader, Count Dooku...though usually as Master and apprentice, plotting how to further their plans. The Military Creation Act was drawing near, and the Jedi were under increasing pressure to defend the Republic. Palpatine showed compassion for their plight, though debate still raged on the subject of creating an army to aid the Jedi Knights. The endless arguments in the Senate were irrelevant, however: the army ordered on Palpatine's order ten years prior was ready. All it took was a curious Jedi on the trail of a mystery assassin to set the ball rolling. When Obi-Wan Kenobi reported from Geonosis that the Confederacy was preparing for war, the assembled Senators knew they had no choice but to grant Palpatine the power to create an army. Palpatine appeared reluctant to accept the grave responsibility, and reminded the Senators that few would be strong enough to propose such a radical move. He thought perhaps Senator Amidala could swing the vote, but only her stand-in, Jar Jar Binks was present. Saddened, Palpatine believed all was lost. His careful manipulation had worked, and the well-meaning Jar Jar stepped in to grant Palpatine emergancy powers. The Chancellor made a passionate speech to the Senate, even as Master Yoda was on his way to collect the army from Kamino. The clonetroopers were deployed against Dooku's forces on Geonosis, and sparked the first battle of the Clone Wars. Dooku informed Darth Sidious that war had begun, shortly before Palpatine oversaw his army mobilizing across the galaxy. With a totally loyal army at his command, Palpatine was one step closer to complete control... |
