| Described as the most evil and powerful being in history, with the deaths of the Republic and the Jedi Order credited to him, Palpatine certainly made an impression in the galaxy. Yet his origins were humble, and he set out as an unassuming senator with no apparent aspirations for anything else...much less ruler of the galaxy. Though the early career of Palpatine started badly, the future Emperor had, as always, a backup. While he lost election after election for a string of political appointments, Palpatine was also dabbling in the dark side. How Palpatine became a Sith Lord was unknown, and his ascent to the position of Sith Master was also shrouded in mystery. He took on the alias of Darth Sidious, and began working on a master plan to change the galaxy and bring about a New Order. Eventually, Palpatine - having learnt from his political mistakes - surprised everyone when he became the senator for Naboo. He garnered much support, and his notes on the nature of power were popular texts. Many young government officials owed the beginnings of their political careers to him. However, his alter ego was also building up for the future. Sidious manipulated many politicians in order to achieve his aims, though he never revealed his true identity. Through Sidious's scheming and Palpatine's good grace and unassuming nature, the senator became a popular figure on Naboo and in the Senate, even gaining the trust of Chancellor Valorum himself. Darth Sidious was already beginning to implement his master plan. He recruited and trained a young Zabrak called Darth Maul as his Sith apprentice, honing him into a deadly weapon against the Jedi. He also began stirring up the Senate, suggesting a taxation on the Free Trade Zones. Valorum passed the motion, and Palpatine calmed the outraged senators by showing them ways in which they could profit from the reform. Sidious began dealings with the Trade Federation, and managed to grant them a larger military force, and had the members of its Directorate who weren't loyal to him assassinated. Sidious was in complete control of the Trade Federation, and ordered them to blockade Naboo to protest against the taxation...and the man who created the idea. |
