A prisoner is standing with a prison officer in the execution chamber. He must choose one of two chairs and sit in it. One chair is an electrified chair that kills instantly. The other chair is harmless.

The prisoner is allowed to ask one question from the prison officer. The prison officer either always tells the truth or always lies but the prisoner does not know if he tells the turth or lies.

What question can the prisoner ask and determine which chair is the harmless chair?

Ask the prison officer one of these questions.

(1) "If I were to ask you, 'Is this the electrified chair?', would your answer be 'Yes'?"

(2) "Is the statement that you will tell the truth equivalent to the statement that this is the electrified chair?"

If the officer's answer is 'Yes', is the chair the prisoner is referring to the electrified chair? You have to figure this out.
