Reds' Spearhead

Liverpool stay on top of the Premiership as they fended off Tottenham's challenge at Anfield after the match ended 2 - 1. A fabulous strike from Danny Murphy and a Michael Owen penalty won the match and bagged three points for Liverpool, though not without any reply from Dean Richards for Tottenham.

The 1st half ended goaless as the two sides took turns to dominate possession.  Tottenham looked dangerous with Jamie Redknapp's fine distribution and freekicks. Simon Davies was providing the passes from the right flank and Steffen Freund was excellent in marshalling the midfield for Tottenham. But Tottenham had found an in-form Jurek Dudek between Liverpool goalposts who was blocking numerous shots.

Liverpool was in control during the 1st half. Murphy was shooting at every chance he had got. Elhadji Diouf and Salif Alassane Diao created problems for Tottenham with their hard running and their trickery. But Liverpool too found a stubborn Kasey Keller who kept Tottenham from falling behind.

The 2nd half was an livelier affair. Diouf was substituted by Milan Baros on 57 mintutes to partner Owen up front. But it was Gustavo Poyet who almost scored twice for Tottenham.

Poyet hooked first time from 12 yards which Dudek saved superbly. Then from a corner, Poyet headed toward goal but it was cleared off the line by Dietmar Hamann.

In the end Liverpool scored through Murphy's curling 25 yards strike after 72 minutes, after receiving the ball from Hamann.

But Tottenham' comeback was short lived.  Owen proved himself to be a match winner once again when he surged down the left, cut into the box and was tackled heavily by Steve Carr. Owen got up and took the penalty confidently.

With Arsenal's loss to Blackburn, Liverpool lead by 4 points gap on the top of the table. It is still early in the season but if Liverpool can beat Valencia in their next Champions League match on Wednesday, Liverpool might just state a strong claim for the Premiership Crown at the end of the season.
