TOO BIG A HOLE 15.11.02 Previous Page Next Page So,
we are out of the Champions’ League. Had
a hunch before the game that “Has Liverpool dug too big a hole for them to get
out?”. You may say that I am wise
after the event. However, this is
not the first time that Liverpool have left it late till the last game of the
group stages to get through to the next round of the Champions’ League. Remember Borussia Dortmund and Roma? Third time unlucky though. What
can be done to improve our European adventure?
GH and all Liverpool staff, players and fans are all thinking about this
question now. Let us trust GH and
his team to come out with the solution as we do need to accumulate points early
in the group stages, and especially in the league which is what we are doing
now. Talking
about the Basel game, it was really a game of 2 halves.
The defence was, in GH’s term, “appalling”.
Stevie G became one of the few players that GH criticised openly. It is plain obvious that he was ball watching at Basel’s
third goal. How could he lose track
of the player he was supposed to mark! I
have also mentioned in my previous notes that Stevie G has not hit his form yet
and this is probably the lowest that he could get.
Hopefully, he will wake up from this harsh lesson and we shall see the
real “Steven Gerrard” soon! Stevie
G aside, I found that Hamann’s performance was equally unacceptable with a
string of bad passes and tackles. Has
the fatigue after the World Cup finally set in?
Only he will know. Heskey? We cannot depend him to score goals; and Murphy did not
attack enough. Smicer was one of
the few players that came out of the game with any credit. This is one of the few games that I see him play well.
Hope he will turn in this type of performance more consistently. Looking
forward to Saturday’s game, has the curse of the “Manager of the Month”
been exercised with our first loss in the league and booting out of the
Champions’ League? Sunderland will be a tough game with them winning 2
consecutive games and Kevin Phillips/Flo hitting form. But I do stand by my view that Sunderland will go down at the
end of the season. Will
Stevie G get to play over the weekend? I
think he will, as GH will want to see a positive response from him and the team.
Heskey seemed to have hobbled out from the Basel game and I do hope to
see Baros given more chances as he created the second goal for Liverpool with a
nice flick. Defence is unlikely to
be changed although 3 goals were conceded.
Probably Hamann will get to rest.
My prediction: Baros / Owen 1 goal each with Dudek keeping a clean sheet
again! Have a nice weekend!
