LIVERPOOL : ARE WE OUT OF THE SLUMP

29.01.03                                                                                                                                       Previous Page          Next Page

2 wins on the trot.  We have not done that for a while.  I watched the repeat telecast of the League Cup semi-final against Sheffield United.  I do agree with Edwin Yeo’s (Newpaper journalist) surprise comments that Liverpool attack, attack and attack!  Even Stephane Henchoz was passing forward instead of his usual pass to Hyypia.  No wonder he spat (on the ground) and gestured to Neil Warnock after all the jibes from that cretin!  He even has the cheek to call Henchoz “foreigner”!  What does that make him?  An English potato?

Coming back to Liverpool’s performance over the past 2 games, I am sure all Liverpool fans can see the self-confidence returning.  Steven Gerrard was impressive with his tackling and passing, Riise with his usual menacing runs and the defence finally starting to look solid again!  The strikers have also started to be more active in attacking.  Is that down to Ian Rush?  Probably, as he would have told them to shoot more instead of just passing around.  My wife and I met him at China Jump (Singapore) with other Liverpool fans (and 1 Arse fan and 1 scum "aka Man U" fan in the crowd).  We paid S$45 per person and the food was junk and we had to queue up for it!  Outrageous!  Anyway, it was quite a good experience as it was the first time I came so close to a Liverpool legend.  Hope we will have more of such events in future!

Back to the strikers, St Mike showed his class on Wednesday with a well-taken goal although he should have gotten a few more.  I am not worry about the misses he had as he will start putting them away when his confidence grows.  The gambling allegations?  I think the English journalists have nothing to do and just wanted to create a mountain out of a mole as they are jealous of Owen’s squeaky clean record.  Yawn!

Heskey has finally shown some improvement by using his strength to his advantage, and he has started to run forward instead of backward!  Hope he will get a few more goals to change my view, and a lot of fans’ views about him.  Congratulations to Dioufy on winning the African Player of the Year award for the 2nd year running!  Is his best position on the right wing with  Riise on the left, Stevie G and Super Dan in the middle?  What is left for Didi?  Good to hear he played 60 minutes for the reserves last night in a 5-0 win against Bradford with Baros netting 4 and Cheyrou grabbing one.  Hail Baros!  GH would have happy problems welcoming back Didi with the current 4 across midfield playing so well, and about his strikers competing hard for the starting places.

So, can we sustain our good performance for the next few games and until the end of the season?  All Liverpool fans certainly hope so but we will keep our feet firmly on the ground before blowing our trumpet at the end of the season.  And we certainly hope the team will do the same!

Crystal Palace is up next in the FA Cup and this will be followed by Arsenal in a mid-week game that we will need to win more than the Arse to pick up points for the Champions’ League.  Henchoz will be suspend against CP after picking up 5 yellow cards (the last being a silly dissent offence in the Aston Villa game when he threw the ball on the ground in anger).  Henchoz has been losing his cool lately after all the frustrations of not winning.  It is good that he cares so much but we need him to have a cool head.  Hope the enforced rest on Saturday will help him to clear his mind.  I think Biscan will come in to replace him with Traore keeping his left back position.  Traore has been getting a lot of stick for going to the ground too often.  I thought he is performing well with less mistakes now and I am more worried about Carragher’s form as he has slipped a few times for the past few games.

The CP game is a potential banana skin as we have lost there 2 years ago in the League Cup semi-final 1st leg before whacking them 5-0 in the return leg at home.  As I have said, we need to keep our feet firmly on the ground in order to win.  GH and his staff will ensure that and we, of course, will like to see a hattrick from one of the strikers, especially from Heskey!
