A view from Cherni Vruh Peak, Vitosha

VITOSHA MOUNTAIN, BULGARIA

Very close to Sofia. Loved by locals for a Sunday out and for skiing in winter. Extremely crowded at the weekends. Traversed by hundreds of alleys marked by yellow arrows pointing the way. Several lifts.

Suggested trail:

A clockwise round-trip, passing the more deserted southern slopes. From the village of Bistritza (reachable by city bus) to Cherni Vruh peak - the highest in Vitosha mountain at 2290 m. Then following the E4 marked trail to the village of Chuypetlyovo. Then proceeding to the village of Vladaya, and then by city bus to Sofia. The trail after Chuypetlyovo is poorly marked but still navigable with caution. Allow 9-12 hours for this trip.

The E4 European trail crosses the Vitosha mountain.
