PIRIN
MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA
Very rocky and considered by some to be the most exciting Bulgarian mountain. Easily accessible from Sofia and, to some extent, Plovdiv, though further South of Rila mountains. Best starting points (clockwise) are the towns of Razlog, Bansko, Gotze Delchev and Melnik. Suggested trail: You may cross Pirin mountains starting from the northwestern town of Razlog, then continue to Yavorov chalet. Via Vichren peak (the highest in the Pirin mountains, 2914 m) to Vichren chalet. Continue to Tevno ezero refuge and later to Pirin chalet. Via Rozhen Monastery reach the red wine-drinking town of Melnik in the southeastern part of Pirin. The trip may take 3-5 days. The E4 European trail crosses the Pirin mountains. |
