Krustzite Peak, Balkan Range

BALKAN RANGE (STARA PLANINA), BULGARIA

The Balkan range separates Bulgaria into a southern and a northern part. It is a very long (700 km) and narrow range reaching the Black Sea. It becomes quite Alpine around the highest Botev Peak (2376 m) but is relatively low and uninspiring east of Hainboaz Pass (also known as Prohod na republikata). The southern parts are more easily accessible by train. Some of the trails reaching from the lower grounds to the peaks may not be well marked, especially in the eastern parts.

Suggested trail:

From Kom Peak (in the western part of the range at the border with Yugoslavia) to Emine Cape on the Black Sea in the East. The trail is 700 km long, usually crossable in 15 to 22 days depending on the pace. It is a part of the E3 European trail.
