Rila Monastery

RILA MOUNTAINS, BULGARIA

The highest peak on the Balkan Peninsula, Moussala (2925 m), is there. Mainly Alpine look, but not as rugged as Pirin mountains. Easily accessible by train or bus, especially from Sofia. The best starting points are in the towns of (clockwise) Dupnitza, Samokov, Kostenetz, Rila and Blagoevgrad.

Suggested trails:

Borovetz Ski Resort to Moussala chalet (by foot or gondola lift) and then to Moussala peak. Can be done in one day if you start early.

Rila Monastery to Malyovitza chalet via Malyovitza and Eleny Vruh peaks is done in a day.

Dupnitza to Sapareva Banya and Panichishte (by bus). Then to the Seven Lakes of Rila. Via the Predela Area go to either Ivan Vazov chalet and then back to Dupnitza, or to Malyovitza chalet and then to Ribni Ezera chalet. Allow 2-3 days.

The E4 and E8 European trails cross the Rila mountains.
