In India, nearly 50% of the 1.1 billion population lives below the poverty line, with much of this population consisting of children. Almost one in 11 children are disabled , making the total number of disabled children staggering. Because of their economic condition and lack of education, these children often do not receive the care they need. Special schools, if they exist, are often far away, medical care is expensive and inaccessible, and parents do not have the training of how to care for their special child. For this reason we take a multi-faceted approach to helping the children and their families. By training special teachers the disabled can be educated, a special hostel provides shelter and food for children whose families cannot afford to support them, field workers teach the parents how to care for the special needs of their child, and vocational training helps to supply jobs to the parents allowing them to provide for their children. In this way we can provide assistance to improve all aspects of the child's life, giving them an opportunity for a positive childhood and a bright future. |
