From the inception of the organisation in 1980, a small clinic for hostel children and local people has discharged its duties. The villagers are mostly poor agricultural coolies and weavers, a population of ten thousand people . Other wise they have to go to near-by towns for medical treatment by bus or on foot. Simple diseases like fever, headache, cold, stomach pain, diarrhea, scabies, and so on are treated by our clinic. One doctor and two nurses work in this clinic each day except Sunday. Thirty to forty patients daily attend our clinic. This unit offers free medical care and supplies to all people in the neighboring villages. Previously the nearest medical care was in Kancheepuram in expensive hospitals that are difficult for villagers to access. The team that works in the medical care unit conducts general medical camps, eye care camps, and health awareness campaigns in that region. This unit also imparts training programs to under privileged women on mother and childcare, first aid, and sanitation with the help of other NGOs.
Orthopeadic Workshop This project constructs appliances for physically handicapped children, mainly for the hostel and CBR area clients. Two multipurpose technicians and two helpers work to make low cost lightweight calipers and crutches made of PVC materials and polypropylene. On average they make 150 calipers, crutches, and sandals per year. The workers of this project also follow up individual cases to check if the appliances given are a proper fit and are in good working condition.
Eye Care Services As proper eye care is very expensive and difficult to access, KOGS sponsors an ophthalmic assistant to conduct eye care camps in many remote villages. These camps identify people who need spectacles or cataracts surgery and refer them to the proper location. Cataracts patients are referred to a nearby NGO clinics sponsored by Rainbow Hospital, Shankara Netralaya, and Lions Club, which perform free cataracts surgery for impoverished people. The ophthalmic assistant also does follow up appointment for patients receiving cataracts surgery, ensuring they receive spectacles and proper medicine.
