Fun Health and
Fitness Facts!!!
*According to the
International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association, there has
been an increase of over 16 million gym and health club memberships
over the past decade...wow! I wonder how many are attending
consistently?!
*Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis),
have found that it may be easier to burn off fat if your diet does not
over-restrict fat, but includes some good fats (i.e. Omega 3 fatty
acids). The research suggested that a healthy diet should consist
of about 30% fat, with emphasis on positive fats such as those found in
fish, nuts, and canola oil. It should be stated, that many
Americans have diets too high in fat, especially the bad fats, such as
trans-fats and polyunsaturated fats.
*An interesting recent study conducted by Wheeling Jesuit University in
West Virginia suggested that drivers that used an alerting aroma or
spritz (i.e. peppermint or cinnamon) were more attentive to varying
road conditions while driving. Similarly, if driving late at
night, regulating your arousal level may prevent over-tired driving.
Strategies may include opening the window, lively music, or using
strong mints such as Altoids. Happy and safe driving!
*As the Nation considers how to reform our health care system, this
past year Lifetime Fitness Experience magazine had a
wonderful
article about the need for system change in the American Healthcare
system.
We rank 45th in longevity and yet spend billions more than any
other
country in health care with 30 % going to administrative costs.
Lets
work for responsible change both personally in caring for our own
healthy
lifestyles, in addition to working for positive national and global
changes!!

purposes

professional.

Words from the heart......
As recent storms, earthquakes and flooding devastated areas around the
globe, let us
keep them in prayer.
As
many of you know, I love to write. I journal, write poetry, and engage
in numerous academic writing activities. Following hurricane Katrina in
2005 I wrote the following poem, it is a reminder of the importance of
self reflection on how we can all work together to reach out to those
in need. I gave the poem to Rebecca, a psychologist who is part of our
club family. Rebecca is a Red Cross volunteer and instrumental in the
administration of disasteAs relief.
Her company, Orion Associates sent bus loads of volunteers to help
during
the time of the disaster. I hope it may instill but a small kernel of
hope
in those who seek to help amidst the recent disasters.
I share the poem again in prayers for all those who have recently been
affected by natural disasters.... (previously written in 2005)
Wept
as Those Are Swept
Wept
as Those are Swept
Devastation
hits the south
With Raging winds and rain
Turning concrete into cotton
Bringing loss and pain
Places of beauty where once stood
Now a garbage filled sea
As waters mixed with chemicals
Waste land, and man and tree
The people call, "please come and help"
I hunger and I thirst
Yet sadly it has only begun
We haven't seen the worst
The media runs to cover the story
As people cry and plea
Please no camera, just give me food
Have compassion on me
A woman is seen pushed from a bus
My baby she screams and yells
Separated from her child
The personal trauma swells
Another man beat his breast
In torment as he wept
I tried to hold onto my wife
But away with the floods she swept
Some are seen looting the streets
others lend helping hands
Some become violent and assaultive
making impossible demands
Conditions worsen as cities once were
are lost forever to sea
As chaos mounts and turmoil grows
The people cry their plea
America "The Super Power"
The seemingly invulnerable place
Is caught off guard, not used to this
Devastation shows its face
It's always in another land
The wars and refugees
As now we struggle and search to find
How to Cope while ill at ease
Yet the smallest of countries open their hearts
and say, "we'll help you through"
Sri Lanka a poor small nation
asserts, "we're here for you"
And people from nearby states
open their doors and lands
Willing to do, all that they can
Extending helping hands
Why is it that in devastation
We see the poles arise?
Those willing to give all that they can
To dry the tearful eyes
And those who seek to take advantage
Acquiring all they can
Is it desperation, or deep frustration
That affects the hearts of man?
And what of our society's response?
We need a generous source
To help in crisis and rebuild
Can we unite in collective force?
To open our homes, our hearts and hands
as individuals, and nationally
to come to agreement and develop a plan
we must work collectively
The beauty of our depth of existence
Requires unity
As questions of the "why" remain
Existentially
I know in my heart as we cry
God hears our every tear
Praying in our broken state
His love and strength are near
And in our torment and despair
It's love that carries on
As we reach to extend with open arms
Hope is never gone
So let us pause in prayer and silence
searching from within
How it is we'll each respond
And where we should begin
As each seeks answers to the question
What is my next step?
Will I help or will I loot
Or will I just forget?
A serious ponderance for each of us
How to react, and when
Yet if each takes just one small step
Beauty will shine again

If we all give, even a little... it goes a long
way!!!
“I never
liked jazz music because jazz music doesn’t resolve. But I was outside
the Bagdad Theater in Portland one night when I saw a man playing the
saxophone. I stood there for fifteen minutes, and he never opened his
eyes. After that I liked jazz music. Sometimes you have to watch
somebody love something before you can love it yourself. It is as if
they are showing you the way.” –In America
the first generation out of slavery invented jazz music. It is a
free-form
expression. It comes from the soul, and it is true.”
(Donald Miller)
Blessings
to each of you, I hope to see you in class soon!!!
