Special Thanks!!
Thanks to Perry who covered for me while gone this past month.
Along with several colleagues from St. Kates, I attended the Annual
American Occupational Therapy Conference in Houston Texas. While
at the conference I attended Board meetings for a Research Organization
for which I serve on the Board and I led the AOTA invited evidenced
based practice Institute on mental health. I too had the opportunity to spend time with valued friends and to enjoy the area. It really was
fun! I have attached a few pictures of the beauty, and sadly of
some of the left over devastation in Galveston from Hurricaine
Ike. I too have chosen hurricane relief as one of the two
charities of the month.

Charities of the Month!!!

Amidst a visit to Galveston, I was reminded of the power of natural
disasters. Where there were once vital buildings and businesses, there
were empty buildings. Though much of the rubble was gone, the aftermath
of the devastation was apparent. Here are some pictures, along
with one of the two charities....

The devastation of the hurricane....

I was moved to
tears by a visit to the sea and the witnessing of sights such as
this. If you'd like to help, the Galveston United Way has

Fabulous
Health and Fitness Information!!

* As our group prepares to go on its 10th charity bike ride, this year
we again venture to the MS 150. Prior to the mid 90's the medical
community often discouraged people with multiple sclerosis from
exercising. Treatment approaches have changed since a 1999 study
(Petajen et al.) found that persons with MS whoo had controlled
exercise fared better than the control group and demonstrated better
cardiovascular fitness, bladder and bowel function, decreased
depression, improved attitude, more energy, and a higher level of
socialization and quality of life. According to the American
Council on Exercise, the National MS Society has outlined the following
objectives for effective exercise programs for persons with MS:
1- Improve socialization and decrease isolation
2- Promote well being and improved self esteem
3- Provide an atmosphere to exercise the minimizes a rise in core body
temperature
4- Prevent symptoms secondary to MS such as muscle atrophy, pressure
sores and joint contractures
5- Maintain and improve range of motion
6- Maintain or increase endurance potential
7- Maximize muscle strength
* Recent research (Faigenbaum et al., 2006) published in Pediatric Exercise Science found
that pre-workout static stretching was associated with short term
reduction in anaerobic strength as well as power in both children and
teens vs. dynamic exercise. Current research supports the use of
dynamic vs static pre-workout warmups yet many physical education
teachers continue to use static stretches. Research is now
exploring the use of dynamic stretching following workouts as compared
to static stretching. The purpose of dynamic stretching is to
increase core muscle temperature, increase circulation and synovial
fluid to the joints, and to provide a warm up in the motor patterns
that simulate the core workout.
*Though many of us love chocolate, it is filled with calories. If
you want to choose the type best for you, choose dark chocolate as it
is full of antioxidants. In addition, recently researchers of the
University of Copenhagen this past year released a study that
indicated persons had fewer hunger cravings after consuming dark
chocolate as opposed to those consuming milk choclate. The reason is
not fully known but it may include the bitter taste or higher level of
cocoa butter.
*Remember to make sure your shoes have adequate support and fit your
foot well. Often people continue to wear shoes long after they are worn
out. Often shoes may still look new even after the insides have worn
out and the soles have developed patterns of overuse causing abnormal
gait and subsequent foot, ankle, knee, hip and back problems. If you
look at the botttom of your soles and notice one side is fairly worn
(or there is abnormal wear or loss of treads), the shoe itself should
be replaced. Use of overworn shoes may throw off your gait and cause
injury while running or working out. With regular use, exercise shoes
often wear out in less than a year. Aerobics instructors are advised to
replace shoes at least every 6 months and/or wear more than one pair so
that shoes have an adequate opportunity to dry out between workouts.
*The above information is for
educational purposes only and not meant to replace the advice of your
health professional.

The Joys of
Motherhood
It seemed just yesterday you were born
On a full moon night, in the dawn of
morn
With curly blonde hair and snow white
skin
You looked the epitomy of parent kin
The bubbles, and toys, took over
the house
And teddies galore, with a puppet mouse
You toddled, and waddled, whimpered and
cooed
Messed, and blessed, laughed and gooed
I look at you now, my beloved hun
Where did the years go, my little one?
You're beautifully grown, near as tall
as me
And such a blessing, to us
you see
Every day I treasure with you
For it won't be long, you'll be
off too
Where do the days go? The months and
the years?
Let's behold each moment, the laughter
and tears
Say thanks to our folks, and our next
of kin
our spouses, our friends, and our
children
For today will be gone, and everpast
Yet precious moments, forever last
So today my dear one, a message so true
My dear Mikaela.... I love you!!!
(mom)

God's blessings to each of you as your remember your friends, family,
parents, and all those loved during the dawn of Spring!!
