Teaching for Student Learning

Reflection

Although this domain covers just one aspect of teaching, it seems to go to the root of what effective teaching is all about.  Each of my lessons begins with a series of objective which are aligned with state standards.  These objectives attempt to stretch students’ minds to relate their classroom learning to real-life application.  I attempt to draw parallels between history concepts and current events.  When my students looked at WWI the US was planning War with Iraq.  When we discussed Pearl Harbor, we reflected on its similarities and differences with the September 11th attacks.  History can be taught as a distant past, or a living bridge between the past, present and future.  Also, learning means more when students are met by the same knowledge across the curriculum.  For example, in French II we discussed William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings, as it related to French history.  Additionally, the same subject was studied a few days later in English, as it related to the development of the English language.  The point is not to repeat the same content, but to build layer after layer onto that content.  Integration challenges students to grow intellectually.
