Car owners who crave individualized
vehicle licence plates will be able to bid for
their car plate of choice by the end of the year,
under a new scheme announced in Wednesday's budget.
The Transport Department says it's confident the
programme won't become a liability for law enforcement.
Under the system, drivers can apply for any combination
of eight letters or numbers they want on their
licence plate. These customized plates would be
advertised in the media before going up for public
auction.

Shenzhen police have handed three suspects over
to their counterparts here. The handover took
place at the Huanggang Border Control Point. One
of the men - aged between 22 and 27 - was arrested
over the seizure of a gun and other weapons during
a raid last year in Mongkok. The other two are
wanted for posssession of dangerous drugs. So
far this year, mainland authorities have handed
four wanted people back to Hong Kong.

Taiwan's opposition
leader Lien Chan said he was "shocked"
by the shooting of President Chen Shui-bian and
demanded a "clear and complete" explanation
of the circumstances. He said "we were very
shocked by the shooting, we strongly condemn any
form of violence. We urge the government to provide
a clear and complete explanation of what happened.
People have the right to know why this happened
at such a critical time."

Campaigns by regional
countries to save poultry flocks by vaccinating
them against bird flu are a "ticking time
bomb" that will encourage the risk of a
devastating pandemic among humans. According
to the British weekly, New Scientist, the rush
to vaccinate without close surveillance is potentially
dangerous.

At least 30 people have been come down with
food poisoning. Health officials suspect they
may have eaten coral fish. Fourteen of them
are in hospital in stable conditon. The Department
of Health has advised the public to be extra
cautious when eating large coral reef fish,
particularly those weighing over two catties,
as they may contain cigua-toxin.
